Which telescopic baton to choose? - comparison

Last week's blog was rather general, today we'll go into the details - again about telescopic batons. You have already learned a bit about the solutions used in construction, and now we will present you how they look in practice, what we can expect in what configurations and at what price. The table at the bottom will allow you to quickly compare the parameters, however, it is worth remembering that some of the models come in many versions, which we will mention in the description of each of them.

We have already mentioned that, despite the apparently similar design, expandlable batons are differentiated in terms of the opening and locking system, material, whether it has been subjected to a hardening process, the form of the handle and the holster. Of course, we are not able to present you all the sticks from our offer - so we have selected a few models that we primarily consider the most interesting and representing the best value for money. We also paid attention to the variety, so each will represent a slightly different price level and application.

Compact telescopic baton for concealed carrying

For starters, a compact that we can always have with us. The characteristic design, devoid of any additional elements, means that no matter where we move our accessory, we will be able to remove it without the risk of catching the clothes. We do not have to worry, however, that the stick will slip out of the hand - the grip is covered with knurling - cross cuts on the grip. Of course, they will not be as effective as heavily textured rubber, but they will reduce the potential hazard. In addition, the lack of an additional layer of polymer on the grip makes it much narrower, and thus easier to hide. However, the compact dimensions result in a limited length, which translates into a limited range. We must remember this assuming the use of a stick against the aggressor.

An additional advantage of short links is increased stiffness and maneuverability of the stick. In addition to performing full swings, we can also use easy thrusts and pressure on sensitive body points. Due to the full steel structure, when it is not unfolded, we can use it as a kubotan. If we are familiar with the appropriate techniques, it will speed up the use of the tool and make it most likely go unnoticed until used.

ESP telescopic baton - great value for money

ESP telexope sticks cover a very wide range of models and it starts right here. Models from the basic series are characterized by the same design as most models from this manufacturer. The difference is the use of non-hardened steel and a slightly simpler holster. However, compared to the huge price difference between this and the higher model, we can judge that this is quite a deal. As we mentioned in the previous blog, hardened sticks are definitely more resistant to bending - if we use a stick for professional use, it will be often used - it's worth investing in.

However, for self-defense applications, when we are not permanently exposed to danger, a good quality non-hardened stick should suffice. In addition, we will meet here one of the best anti-slip handles - the Extra Grip version - it will guarantee us certainty of use when our hands are dirty or wet, and will reduce the potential tearing of the stick by the aggressor. Made of durable polymer, the holster allows for instant access thanks to the patented closure system. At the same time, it is flat enough to be easily hidden under a longer jacket or coat.

Hardened telescopic ESP baton - the choice of professionals

However, if we assume that we expect a bit more from our stick - we are talking here mainly about longevity - we should purchase a stick whose segments have been hardened. As already mentioned, in the case of ESP, the configuration of length - type of grip - attached holster - may differ, so in this case we wanted to present a version with a smooth, non-slip handle. It will work well both when carrying it in a pouch and, for example, in a pocket, from which it will be easier to draw than models with more aggressive texturing.

In the case of the discussed configuration, the set also includes a more advanced pouch. Similarly to the lower models, it is made of a mechanically durable polymer, however, it is additionally equipped with an angle adjustment system, commonly known as Roto. It allows you to set the stick in one of 16 positions in the range of 360 degrees. In the case of carrying it on the belt, it will allow us to choose the optimal position for a quick and comfortable selection, while when we want discretion, it will allow us to adjust the position under a jacket or coat so that it is as little distinguished as possible.

Is it worth choosing a chrome telescopic baton?

For people who like to stand out from the crowd, an ordinary black telescope may seem a bit common. In this case, we offer chrome-plated or gold-titanium nitride models. But speaking seriously - both the principle of the stick and the purpose for which it is used make its surface vulnerable to damage. Most models are protected with varnishes, which, however, have limited abrasion resistance and are prone to chipping. For this reason, some models are electroplated, achieving higher coating resistance. The leading coating here is the aforementioned titanium nitride, also known from covers on outdoor knives. In that case, it is much more focused on abrasions and yet it fulfills its role perfectly.

It is also worth paying attention to the handle used in this model. The manufacturer describes it as ergonomic - its visibly concave profile provides better support for the hand. In addition, the recess guarantees a repeatable grip with each use, which can be a convenience for people who use the stick regularly. The holster in this case is identical to the previous model. However, we can mention here a bit about accessories for telescopic batons. For professional use, for example, inspection mirrors can be useful - they will allow you to inspect the vehicle's chassis or assess the risk lurking around the corner of the building. The manufacturers' offer also includes crowbars mounted on a stick and glass hammers, the use of which we do not need to explain.

Bonowi - most advanced expandable batons

Finally, we will move on to hi-tech - models equipped with slightly more advanced locking systems than those based on friction. On the market we will meet two main companies using this type of solutions - German Bon (supplying European uniformed services) and ASP (supplying American uniformed services. For example, we will use Bon, because apart from the CamLock locking system, it is also distinguished by an aluminum construction. punches, and thanks to the increased diameter, it has the same solid construction as steel models.

The radically higher price of this type of baton has a very simple justification - 100% reliability combined with great comfort. All models of the previous type equipped with a friction-based lock have one common defect - with insufficient force to unfold them, there may be insufficient locking in the open position. Systems such as CamLock and DiscLoc from ASP mean that for their proper distribution, it is enough to pull the links out of the grip with your fingers. Folding is also slightly different than in the case of classic models - in this case we use a convenient button in the grip - hitting a hard surface will not be necessary.
